Less Hustle, More Peace: Your Guide to a Truly Restful Holiday
Are you longing for a restful holiday but just don’t see it happening? Do you often find yourself stressed, overwhelmed, and overcommitted during the holiday season? Here are some tips to help you unwind, recharge, and truly enjoy your time off.
Limit Work
If you are taking time off from work, then actually take time off. If possible, avoid checking work emails and work text messages and taking calls during your holiday. Schedule your time off on your calendar so your coworkers know that you are unavailable. You may also want to make your clients aware when you’ll be unavailable. This may be a real challenge for many of you.
Set Social Boundaries
Make your own decisions about events to attend. Give yourself permission not to attend every gathering to which you are invited. If you’re spending time with family or friends, communicate any boundaries you might need such as time for yourself or personal space. Set time limits so you know going into the gathering when you will leave. Avoid negative or draining people.
Take a Break from Technology
Reduce use of or completely disconnect from your phone, computer, or social media accounts for a set period. This means no checking emails, scrolling through Instagram, Facebook or TikTok. Unplugging will give your mind a break from constant stimulation and allow you to be fully invested in the moment.
Prioritize Rest and Sleep
Be intentional in prioritizing rest and sleep. Do something that you can’t do when working; sleep in. Take naps, even if they are short power naps. Relax before bedtime at night. Avoid screen time right before going to bed.
Streamline Holiday Plans
Make plans in advance and use a calendar and to-do list to ensure everything is covered. Simplify your holiday schedule by cutting down on commitments. Ask for help or delegate, as needed, which will reduce stress. If you’re hosting, involve others in preparing food, setting up decorations, and cleaning up after.
Practice Self-Care
Take time for yourself and engage in some things that you really enjoy doing and may not get to do often. Pamper yourself with a favorite treat or a massage. Spend time enjoying a hobby. Allow yourself time for fun - go see a movie, play a game, travel. Practice gratitude by reflecting on all your blessings.
By focusing on balance, relaxing, finding joy in simple things, and fully engaging in the moment, you can ensure that your holiday is truly a restful and meaningful time.
